Chi City native (SOUTHSIDE!!) and Harvard Law grad, Deval Patrick, became the first black governor in the state of Massachussetts.

The first and only black governor in the USA, L. Douglas Wilder, had this to say on Patrick:

"I'm so happy to lose my title as being the only one, let me tell you how pleased I am to see it," said Wilder, who now serves as mayor of Richmond, Va. "Is it a furtherance of the American dream? Yes. Can he inspire other people? He will. So yes, I'm very, very happy to see this club expand."

Criminal defense attorney, Keith Ellison, became the first first African American elected to Congress from Minnesota. He also is the first Muslim sworn into federal office. He converted to the religion when he was in college.

He faced some criticism before he even stepped foot in his Capitol Hill office. Rep. Virgil Goode (R-Va.), sent a letter to hundreds of constituents in which he warned that “many more Muslims” will be elected to Congress and follow Ellison’s lead if immigration rules aren’t tightened. Umm, whatev. I guess Farrakahn is and Ali are threats to national security too.




Also, if youre in DC and had a chance to check out the Congressional Black Caucus shinding the other day, my fave gospel singer, Karen Clark Sheard, was there at their swearing in of the black lawmakers in the 110th session of Congress. I hope they all act right, including you Mr. Rangel and Mr. William Jefferson!!

I know elections have been over for nearly a month. However, the DC mayoral race really intrigued me. Apparently the real race was the Democratic primaries because the overwhelming majority of DC residents are Democratic not Republican. So the primary race between Linda Cropp and Adrian Fenty was the real race, not the election in November. Anyhoo, I just noticed that the mayors of Washington, DC have their own brand of style. Check it...

First, it was Mississippi native Marion Berry styling the gangsta "B**$% set me up look."

So, on November 8, without much competition from the republicans, DC elected its 5th mayor, and along with it, elected its 5th new era of mayoral style. The 35-year-old mayor-elect and lawyer, Adrian Fenty, along with his Fedora hats will establish the look and style for DC for the next four years. He'll take over from the current bow-tie diplomacy and head up the Inspector GoGo Gadget regime on January second.

During the 1980s, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee famously ordered special scrutiny for any black people traveling in white sections of the parish. "It's obvious," Lee said, "that two young blacks driving a rinky-dink car in a predominantly white neighborhood ... They'll be stopped."

The New Orleans Gambit newsweekly reported that 1994, "after two black men died in the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center within one week, Lee faced protests from the black community and responded by withdrawing his officers from a predominantly black neighborhood. 'To hell with them,' he'd said. 'I haven't heard one word of support from one black person.'"

The Gambit also reported in April of this year that in Jefferson Parish, officers were found to be using as target practice what critics referred to as "a blatantly racist caricature" of a black male. Sheriff Lee laughed when presented with the charges. "I'm looking at this thing that people say is offensive," he says. "I've looked at it, I don't find it offensive, and I have no interest in correcting it."

These accusations of "target practice" gained force a few weeks later with the May 31 killing of 16-year-old Antoine Colbert, who was behind the wheel of a stolen pickup truck with two other teens. One hundred-ten shots were fired into the truck, killing Colbert and injuring his passengers. In response to criticism from black ministers over the incident, Lee responded "They can kiss my ass."

"Shortly after the plea, there was a question of whether Melton still could be removed from office. The Mississippi Constitution states that public officials found guilty of "willful neglect of duty or misdemeanor in office" must be removed from office.

"If that were the case, any elected official who ran a stop sign or pled guilty to fishing without a license would have to resign," Danks said. The line in the state constitution relates to crimes that show a neglect of duty, and Melton's gun offenses do not rise to that level, he said."
