How a man who died for good
Could not have a day that would
Be set aside for his recognition" - Happy Birthday - Stevie Wonder"
African Americans have come a long way since Martin Luther King's death 38 years ago. And in most cities I've ever lived in, we always had a march on MLK st, MLK blvd, MLK ave, b/c you know ever city has a street named after him in the hood. Anyhoo, here in the district, Marion Berry changed the parade celebration of the holiday to a day in April so more people could participate in warmer weather. Soo, I guess instead I will take a visit to the the Anacostia Community_Museum. I encourage you guys wherever you are to take a visit to museums to be reminded of the time and era of which Dr. Martin Luther King tried to change.
Here are just a few of the great museums I've visited and recommend as a must see for all creeds and colors.
If you're in the midwest, take a drive down to the Ohio riverfront in the 'Nati to visit the beautiful newly built National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

or take a trip to the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago

If you're out west take a trip to the California African American Museum in LA.

If you're in the NYC, take a tour of various african american historical sites - although the african burial ground is closed right now.

If you're down in the dirty, you must take a trip to:
The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute across from the 16th Street Baptist Church where 4 little girls were killed from a bomb

The National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Hotel where MLK was killed,

or the King Center in Atlanta (you might even get a glimpse of eyecandy Dexter).

And if your feeling complacent and disconnected from the struggles that seem like a distant memory, listen to this woman's story of her struggles as an African American just trying to execute one of her basic rights. Its a stirring short commentary. (listen)
Never forget or else you run the risk of repeating what you dismiss from memory.
